In the world of food these days, the importance of buying local is something you hear a lot about. Wilkinson bread is mixed and baked right in front of you--it can't get much more local than that. We're also committed to supporting local families, communities and businesses, and each Bread Bakery location means good, stable jobs for local people.
We believe it's important to do our part in preserving the planet for future generations of bread lovers. The fact that Wilkinson Bread isn't transported across the country in large trucks means we have a far smaller carbon footprint than national brands.

Our bags are made from oxo-biodegradable plastic, which means they're designed to fragment on a molecular level and then biodegrade without leaving behind any harmful residue. Because they're still made from petroleum products, they admittedly aren't a perfect environmental solution. But they're the most planet-friendly bread bags currently available and are fully recyclable. When a new, better product becomes viable, you can be sure we'll make the switch.
Healthy bread has been around for about as long as people have, and there's a reason it has been called "the staff of life." Until the time of the industrial revolution, it was made by hand, from natural ingredients and eaten warm from the fire or oven. In European towns, the local baker was viewed as a craftsman, and bread has remained an essential, cherished part of our modern lives.
Unfortunately, though our centuries-old romance with bread continues, the way it is made has drastically changed--and not for the better. With modernization and the demands for mass production, bread moved from the baker's oven to large factories. Long shipping distances and the need for an extended grocery store shelf life required the addition of chemicals and artificial preservatives. Health, purity, and freshness were inevitably sacrificed.
Ironically, the invention of our high-tech Bread Bakery makes it possible to once again experience bread the way it used to be--healthy, pure, and most of all, fresh. Wilkinson-fresh.
